TRAINING SEMINARS

As the former Manager of Learning & Development for an international IT consulting firm, I understand how difficult it can be to pull employees out of work for training. Consequently, all of my training seminars (with the exception of the Situational Leadership® sessions) are designed in four-hour modules. That way, the sessions can be customized to fit half-day, full-day, day-and-a-half, or two-day formats, depending upon your organization’s needs. The following are brief descriptions of the seminars I offer. Please let me know if you have any questions – or if you would like more information on any of the sessions.

MARATHON LEADERSHIP®

As the world settles into the new millennium, business leaders face a host of complex challenges: a volatile global economy, a significant shift in worker demographics, an increase in shareholder expectations, and an accelerated rate of technological change that is unparalleled in history. These challenges, and countless others, require a new approach to leadership – one grounded in self-awareness, adaptability, and shared power. Based on The 26.2 Lessons for Modern Leaders, this highly interactive session focuses on helping participants improve their leadership skills though self-analysis, case studies, and group exercises.

LEADING ACROSS GENERATIONS

In the past, we’ve typically defined diversity in terms of race, ethnicity, or gender. But as I’ve worked with organizations all over the world, I’ve discovered that some of the biggest diversity challenges facing both managers and individual contributors are created by different generations working side by side in the workplace. To that end, this session is designed to help participants better understand and manage the unique characteristics that members of different generations bring to the workplace. Participants are introduced to the fours generations that constitute the American workforce (Veteran, Baby Boomer, Generation X, and Millennial) including each generation’s strengths and weaknesses as employees. Participants then use case studies and group exercises to develop best practices for recruiting, developing, motivating, retaining, and communicating with workers from each of the generations.

DiSC® BEHAVIORAL STYLES

Developed by William Marston in 1921, the DiSC® model is divided into four quadrants that reliably describe four styles of human behavior: Dominance (D), Influential (i), Steadiness (S), and Conscientiousness (C). In this training session, participants are introduced to the model and the four styles, discover what their own style combination is, learn how their individual behavioral tendencies influence their interactions with others, and practice more effective communication and interaction skills – based on the DiSC® concepts. Some clients choose to have participants simply fill out a DiSC® Self-Survey, while other clients prefer that participants receive 360-degree feedback – a service I’m proud to offer in strategic partnership with Leading Solutions Group.

CONFLICT RESOLUTION

Conflict in the workplace is inevitable; however, that is not necessarily a bad thing.  If handled correctly, workplace conflict actually can lead to better decisions and stronger relationships among co-workers.  Unfortunately, most conflict is NOT handled correctly, which is where this training comes in.  Co-developed and usually co-facilitated with Dr. Michael Spangle – an internationally recognized expert on conflict resolution – this session uses numerous case studies and group exercises to teach participants practical conflict resolution skills that can be applied immediately.  Participants are also taught how to handle manipulative and difficult individuals, as well as how to recognize when a third party may be necessary to resolve the situation.

NEGOTATION SKILLS FOR NON-SALES PROFESSIONALS

People often equate negotiation with sales agreements or labor contracts; however, negotiation occurs whenever two or more people engage in problem-solving discussions designed to promote shared understandings, resolve differences, or engage in tradeoffs that will be mutually beneficial.  To that end, this session introduces participants to effective negotiation skills, including “The Funnel Approach,” recognizing the difference between positions and interests/needs, and developing your BATNA.  Co-developed and usually co-facilitated with Dr. Michael Spangle – an internationally recognized expert on negotiation – this highly interactive session will teach participants practical negotiation skills that can be applied immediately.

HE SAID, SHE SAID: GENDER COMMUNICATION IN THE WORKPLACE

Although men and women have been working side by side in the United States for generations, effective gender communication in the workplace remains a challenge for many individuals.  Therefore, this session is designed to help participants better recognize and understand the differences (and similarities) in the communication behaviors that men and women typically bring to the workplace.  Participants also will learn specific communication techniques to help them engage in more effective gender communication in the workplace.  This often-sensitive subject is presented in a neutral, non-judgmental way and is based on the findings of research from multiple perspectives.

THE SIZZLE AND THE STEAK: EFFECTIVE PRESENTATION SKILLS

For better or worse, individuals often are judged by how well they carry themselves during workplace presentations.  To that end, this highly interactive session is designed to help participants better organize, prepare, and deliver effective workplace presentations.  Because class size is limited, participants get the opportunity to deliver prepared presentations, which are recorded and then reviewed so that they receive targeted, individual feedback from the facilitator and other participants.  Specific topics include analyzing intended audiences and developing presentations specifically targeting that audience, effectively organizing presentations based on the general and specific purposes for the presentation, demonstrating polished and effective delivery techniques, and turning negative nervous energy into positive performance energy.
